Your first date safety checklist: what to do before, during and after
By the Miragano team. Updated
A safe first date comes down to a few habits: confirm the person is real with a quick video call, meet somewhere public and busy, get there and home on your own, tell someone you trust where you'll be, and set a check-in time. Keep your drink and your phone with you, and leave whenever you want. None of this kills the romance. It frees you up to enjoy it.
Before the date: do a little homework
- Confirm they're real. A five minute video call before meeting is the simplest test there is. Our guide on how to spot a catfish covers the red flags.
- Keep chatting on the app. Stay on Miragano until you're comfortable. There's no rush to hand over your number or social handles.
- Agree a clear plan. A specific place, day and time beats a vague "let's grab a drink somewhere".
- Choose a short first date. Coffee, a walk in a busy park or one drink. Easy to extend if it's going well, easy to end if it isn't.
Where should you meet on a first date?
Meet somewhere public, busy and familiar to you. A cafe, a bar you like or a popular market all work. Avoid their home, your home, remote spots and anywhere you'd struggle to leave on your own. Daytime or early evening tends to feel easier for a first meeting.
Get there on your own and plan your way home before you set off. That way you never depend on your date for a lift, and you can leave whenever you like.
Who should know about your date?
Tell at least one person you trust who you're meeting, where and when, and roughly when you expect to be done. Share a screenshot of their profile if that helps. Then agree what happens if they don't hear from you.
On Miragano, a Safe Date Check-in does this for you. It's free for everyone, private, and your date is never told. The steps are below.
During the date: stay in control
- Watch your drink. Order it yourself, keep it in sight and get a fresh one if you leave it unattended.
- Know your limits. Drinking less than usual on a first date keeps your judgement sharp.
- Keep your phone charged. Bring a small power bank if your battery is unreliable.
- Keep personal details light. Your home address, workplace specifics and money matters can wait until you know someone well.
- Trust your gut. If something feels off, it's fine to leave. A polite "I'm going to head off" is a complete sentence.
What if something goes wrong?
If you feel unsafe, move towards staff or other people, call someone you trust or contact emergency services. If you have a Safe Date Check-in running on Miragano, tapping "I need help" shows your local emergency number to tap (Miragano never dials for you), emails your trusted contact straight away and flags an urgent report to our moderation team.
After the date: close the loop
Let your friend know you're home, or tap "I'm safe" on your check-in. If the date crossed a line, you can report them from your chat and block them in the same step. Blocking is instant, ends the match and hides you both from each other. Reporting and blocking are free, always. See our safety page for everything that's included.
And if it went brilliantly? Lovely. Our guide on going from match to a first date has ideas for what comes next. Ready to meet people who've been photo verified? Join Miragano.
How to set up a Safe Date Check-in on Miragano
A Safe Date Check-in lets someone you trust know where you are and makes sure they hear from us if you don't check in. It's free for every member.
- 1
Plan the date in chat
Propose a date in your Miragano chat with a place, day and time. Your match accepts or declines.
- 2
Add a trusted contact
Once the date is accepted, open the check-in and add a trusted contact's name and email. They get one confirmation email with a one-click opt-out.
- 3
Pick your check-in time
Choose when you want to check in. We suggest two hours after the date starts, and you can set it up to twelve hours after.
- 4
Answer "Are you OK?"
At your check-in time, the app asks if you're OK. Tap "I'm safe" and the check-in closes. Your date is never told about any of it.
- 5
Let it work if you can't answer
If you don't answer within 30 minutes, your contact is emailed once with the date details. Tapping "I need help" emails them straight away and shows your local emergency number.
Questions people ask
What is the most important first date safety tip?
The most important tip is to make sure someone you trust knows who you're meeting, where and when. Pair that with meeting in a busy public place and arranging your own transport there and back, and you've covered the biggest risks. If you can, confirm the person is real with a short video call beforehand. On Miragano, a Safe Date Check-in automates the friend part: your trusted contact is emailed if you don't check in after the date, and the check-in is free for everyone.
Where is the safest place for a first date?
The safest place for a first date is somewhere public, busy and familiar to you, such as a cafe, a popular bar or a lively market. Choose a spot with staff and other people around, good transport links and an easy way out. Avoid either person's home, remote locations and anywhere that would leave you depending on your date for a lift. Daytime or early evening often feels easiest. A short first date, like coffee or one drink, also makes it simple to leave if needed.
How does Safe Date Check-in work on Miragano?
Safe Date Check-in lets you add a trusted contact to an accepted date. You enter their name and email and pick a check-in time, suggested at two hours after the start and up to twelve hours after. They get one confirmation email with a one-click opt-out. At your check-in time the app asks if you're OK. Tap "I'm safe" to close it. If you don't answer within 30 minutes, your contact is emailed once with the date details. It's free for every member.
Will my date know I set up a check-in?
No, your date is never told that you set up a Safe Date Check-in. It's completely private between you, your trusted contact and Miragano. Nothing in the app or in any message to your date mentions it. That means you can use it on every first date without it feeling awkward or like a statement of distrust. Plenty of people simply treat it as a sensible habit, the same as telling a friend where they'll be. It's free for everyone, on every plan, always.
What happens if I tap "I need help" during a check-in?
Tapping "I need help" does three things at once. It shows your local emergency number so you can tap to call it yourself, because Miragano never dials on your behalf. It emails your trusted contact straight away with an urgent message and your date details. And it flags an urgent report to our moderation team. If you're in immediate danger, call emergency services directly, move towards staff or other people, and get somewhere safe as quickly as you can. Safety tools are free for everyone.
What happens to my check-in details after the date?
Check-ins, including your trusted contact's name and email, are deleted 30 days after the date. We keep them that long so the check-in can do its job around the date itself, then remove them. Your contact can also opt out at any time using the one-click link in their confirmation email, which clears their details from that check-in and stops any further emails to them. If they opt out, you'll see that in the app so you can choose someone else.
Should I video call before a first date?
Yes, a short video call before a first date is a smart, normal step. Five minutes is enough to confirm the person matches their photos and to get a feel for how you get on. It also makes the first meeting less awkward, because you've already said hello. On Miragano every member is photo verified, so you already know the face matches the person, but a call still helps you judge the vibe. If someone keeps dodging a call, take that as a warning sign.
How do I leave a first date that feels wrong?
You can simply leave. Say something short and polite, like "I'm going to head off, take care", pay for your own share if you like, and go. You don't need a detailed excuse and you don't owe anyone a full evening. Having your own transport planned makes this easy. If you feel unsafe, ask staff for help, call a friend or contact emergency services. Afterwards you can report and block the person on Miragano for free, from your chat with them.
Is it safe to give my phone number before a first date?
It's safest to keep chatting on the dating app until you've met and feel comfortable. Your phone number can link to other personal information, and a dating app keeps reporting and blocking tools close at hand. There's no rush. On Miragano, bios and prompts block phone numbers, emails, social handles and links, and the chat works well for planning the date, including proposing a place, day and time. Share your number later if and when you're sure you want to.
