Sharing your location when dating: what to share, with whom, and when

By the Miragano team. Updated

When you're dating, share your location with people you trust, not with people you've just met. Your date needs to know where to meet you, not where you live, work or spend your Sundays. Keep your home address private until you know someone well, check what your profile and photos give away, and make sure a friend knows where your date is happening. On Miragano, your exact coordinates are never shown: other members see an approximate distance in kilometres.

Who should know where you are?

There are two very different kinds of location sharing in dating. Sharing with someone you trust, like a close friend or family member, is a safety tool: if something goes wrong, someone knows where to look. Sharing with someone you've just met is a risk you don't need to take yet. Keep the two separate.

Before a date, tell your trusted person the venue, the time and the first name of who you're meeting. Many phones let you share your live location with chosen contacts for a set time; that can be reassuring on a first date, as long as it goes to your friend and not your match.

What does a dating profile reveal about where you live?

More than you might think. Before you publish a profile, look at it the way a stranger would:

  • Photos taken at home can show your street, your front door, the view from your window or a house number.
  • Photos at work can reveal an employer, a uniform or a lanyard with your name.
  • Regular spots such as your gym, local cafe or school gate photos can make your routine easy to piece together.
  • Car photos may show a number plate.
  • Bios that name your exact neighbourhood, workplace and favourite pub together give away a lot.

None of this means hiding your life. Just crop, choose another photo, or keep the detail general: the town or area, not the street.

How does Miragano handle your location?

Miragano asks where you're based so it can show you people nearby. You can let your browser share your location once, or simply type your town. Your exact coordinates are never shown to other members. In Discover, people see an approximate distance rounded to whole kilometres, such as "3 km away", and you can change how far away people can be in your settings.

Miragano has no live location sharing between members. Bios and prompts cannot contain phone numbers, emails, social handles or links, which keeps contact details off profiles. If you want to pause being seen for a while, you can pause your profile for free; your matches and chats stay.

How should you handle location on the day of the date?

  • Meet at the venue. Don't be picked up from home, and don't invite a first date to your place.
  • Plan your own route home. Public transport, a booked taxi or your own car means you never have to share your address.
  • Be vague about where you live. "Just north of the centre" is plenty for a first date.
  • Watch the goodbye. If you don't want them to see where you go, leave first or wait inside until your ride arrives.

Our first date safety checklist covers the rest of the evening, and meeting someone from a dating app for the first time covers the build up.

How does Safe Date Check-in share your plans?

Safe Date Check-in is Miragano's free way to make sure someone you trust knows where your date is. When you add a trusted contact to an accepted date, they get one short confirmation email. They hear from us again only if you don't answer "Are you OK?" at your check-in time, or if you tap "I need help". Those emails include the venue, the time and the first name of the person you're meeting. They never include photos, messages or coordinates, and your date is never told. Check-ins are deleted 30 days after the date.

Questions people ask

Should I share my location with my date?

Share the meeting place with your date, but not your home address, your workplace or your routine, at least until you know and trust them. A date only needs to know where to meet you. If you want someone to know where you are during the date, share it with a trusted friend or family member instead. Many phones let you share your live location with chosen contacts for a set time. On Miragano, a free Safe Date Check-in also makes sure a trusted contact knows the venue and time.

Does Miragano show my exact location?

No. Miragano never shows your exact coordinates to other members. It uses your location to find people near you, and in Discover other members see an approximate distance rounded to whole kilometres, such as "3 km away". You can let your browser share your location once during setup, or simply type your town instead. You can also change how far away the people you see can be. Miragano has no live location sharing between members, and contact details cannot be added to bios or prompts.

How can a dating profile give away where I live?

Photos are the most common way. A picture outside your home can show your street or door number, a view from your window can be recognisable, and photos at work can show your employer or a name badge. Regular spots, like your gym or a local cafe, can reveal your routine, and car photos can show a number plate. A bio that names your exact neighbourhood and workplace adds to the picture. Cropping photos and keeping details general, such as naming the town rather than the street, solves most of it.

Is it safe to let a date pick me up from home?

For a first date, it is safer to meet at the venue and travel there and back on your own. Being picked up means your date learns your address before you know them, and it leaves you depending on them for a lift home. Arranging your own transport keeps you in control: you can leave whenever you want, and your address stays private. Once you have met a few times and trust someone, sharing more is a choice you can make on your own terms.

Who should know where my date is happening?

At least one person you trust, such as a close friend or family member, should know where your date is, what time it starts, when you expect to finish and the first name of who you're meeting. Agree what happens if they don't hear from you. On Miragano, a free Safe Date Check-in does this automatically: your trusted contact is emailed with the venue and time if you don't answer "Are you OK?" after your check-in time. Your date is never told about it.

What does my trusted contact see with Safe Date Check-in?

When you add a trusted contact, they get one confirmation email saying you've added them for a date on a certain day, with a one-click way to remove themselves. They only hear from us again if you don't answer "Are you OK?" in time, or if you tap "I need help". Those emails include the venue, the time and the first name of the person you're meeting. They never include photos, your messages or coordinates. Check-ins and your contact's details are deleted 30 days after the date.

Should I use live location sharing on a first date?

Live location sharing can be reassuring on a first date, as long as you share it with someone you trust and not with your date. Many phones and messaging apps let you share your location with chosen contacts for a set length of time, which then stops automatically. Tell your contact what you're doing and when you expect to be home. Miragano does not have live location sharing between members; its Safe Date Check-in shares your plans by email with a trusted contact instead.

How much should I say about where I live when chatting?

Keep it general until you know someone well. Naming your town or a broad area is plenty for a first conversation and a first date, and it still lets you talk about local places you both like. Your street, your exact neighbourhood, your workplace and your daily routine can wait. Keeping the chat on the dating app until you've met also helps, because you share less personal information and reporting and blocking stay easy. If someone keeps pressing for your address early on, treat it as a warning sign.
